Funding helps Chicago airport build new tower

November 15, 2010, 04:38 pm

A new South Air Traffic Control Tower will be under construction at the O'Hare Airport in Chicago thanks to funds from the Federal Aviation Administration. The new structure will do more than enhance safety for pilots and their passengers.

U.S. Transportaton Secretary Ray LaHood says the new tower will help create more jobs. With unemployment above 9 percent nationwide, job growth is needed in communities across the country.

Mayor Richard Daley says the updates are needed to the facility.

"The building of a south air traffic control tower is essential for the continued modernization of O'Hare which increases our ability to compete in the global economy," says Daley. "A modernized O'Hare will generate new jobs and additional economic activity for Chicago, the region and the state. During these challenging economic times, such economic stimulus is greatly needed."

Having a good air traffic control tower is important for safety reasons. Those who work in the structure are responsible for monitoring aircraft and ensuring accidents don't happen. While collisions may not happen daily at an airport, they are enough of a risk that life insurance for pilots should be considered for anyone who flies a private plane.
