Pilot rescued after helicopter crashes off Miami coast

March 30, 2011, 08:15 pm

A pilot was rescued by a private vessel after landing in the waters off the Miami coast on Sunday, March 27, according to the Miami Herald.

The news source reports that the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing with his privately owned helicopter about 20 miles off shore between Miami and the Bahamas. The unidentified pilot was the only individual on-board at the time of the water landing.

A privately owned vessel, the Contingen-sea, was the first to arrive at the scene of the crash and reportedly remained with the helicopter until the Cost Guard arrived. The aircraft was then taken back to Miami by the Marine Towing and Salvage service.

The source says the cause of the emergency landing remains unknown.

Though this event ended well for the individual involved, many times water landings can end in fatalities. This is one of the many hazards pilots face that makes it particularly important for them to have pilot life insurance coverage - especially if they have families who are financially dependent on them.
