FAA announces agreement with European Commission

June 18, 2010, 09:31 pm

The Federal Aviation Administration has announced the conclusion of negotiations with the European Commission over the NextGen Research Agreement, which will allow greater consistency in aviation policies on both sides of the Atlantic.

The goal specifically seeks consistent service in avionics, communications and operational methods with NextGen and Europe's Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR). In the announcement, FAA Chief Operating Officer Hank Krakowski noted that "harmonization is the key to the future of air travel over the North Atlantic."

Krakowski also said that the agreement "allows us to work together to give the airlines a seamless transition between our airspaces."

A total of 22 different areas of cooperation are dealt with under the agreement, which will result in initiatives like replacing voice communications with data communications, and implementing System Wide Information Management to better allow FAA systems to communicate with one another.

Looking ahead, the agreement also includes closer cooperation on research involving things like 4-D Trajectory Based Operations, which factor time into existing dimensions of latitude, longitude and altitude in an aircraft's flight profile.
