FAA NextGen contract award announced by Boeing

June 4, 2010, 04:51 pm

Boeing announced recently it has won another contract from the Federal Aviation Administration tied to the latter's Next Generation Air Transportation System.

The contract may be worth up to $1.7 billion and covers work related to modeling and simulation for air traffic management and the integration different types of air and ground technologies used in NextGen while considering different types of vehicles involved.

"By applying fully integrated solutions - from concept development to full-scale flight demonstrations - our team is ready to assist the government in developing and testing advanced air traffic management concepts that will improve safety, reliability and efficiency," Greg Deiter, a vice president with Boeing, said.

The NextGen System is an attempt to improve flight safety and accuracy by switching from a ground-based tracking model to one that uses a global positioning system and satellites. Through the system, air traffic controllers and pilots will get information about the position of planes that is more up-to-date.

Some airports already feature some NextGen systems, including one near Philadelphia and another one in Juneau, Alaska.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19819570-ADNFCR
