Newly-launched website aims at reducing midair collisions

August 11, 2011, 05:14 pm

In an effort to stem the number of midair collisions in general aviation, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Department of Defense have teamed together to create the SeeAndAvoid.org website.

"Our goal is to eliminate midair collisions and reduce close calls through continuous flight safety and proper flight planning," stated the FAA. "By promoting information exchange between civilian pilots and the military flight safety community, we hope to provide one-stop shopping to help all of us safely share the skies."

The new website uses a simple point-and-click interface of Google maps and graphics that depict airspace restrictions. It includes data on anticipated airspace closures, as well as depictions of Special Use Airspace and Military Operations Areas.

The FAA hopes that general aviators will take advantage of SeeAndAvoid.org. It states that knowing where military operations are in flight is just as important to flight safety as looking up the weather. The federal organization also hopes that safety officers at military bases around the country will make use of the website.

According to the FAA, there are more than 618,000 certified pilots in the United States, nearly 200,000 of whom work in the private sector. All aviators can benefit from pilot life insurance.
