Airplane tires need to be monitored for safety

December 9, 2010, 09:15 am

Most people wouldn't imagine going years without inspecting their car tires to ensure they are in proper condition. It's important for airplane owners to show the same diligence when it comes to their aircraft wheels as well.

Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company says it's important to not only check a tire's air pressure, but also its treads. Uneven use can result in a dangerous situation for pilots and their passengers. Tires are a crucial component to an aircraft during landings and take-offs.

Product support manager at Goodyear Larry Rapsard says there are several other signals that a tire needs to be replaced.

"Sidewall damage including some weatherchecking, cracks, or cuts means the tire should be scrapped if the damage extends down to the fabric plies. The same goes for tread cuts and groove cracking," says Rapsard.

Those who are unsure of how to check their tires should consultant a professional airplane mechanic.

When it comes to flight safety, it's important for pilots to consider more than just their tires and weather conditions. Pilot insurance should also be on one's checklist.
