Another air traffic controller caught sleeping on the job

April 7, 2011, 10:54 pm

Following the recent scandal in which an air traffic controller fell asleep during his shift at Washington's Reagan International Airport, it has been revealed that yet another controller was discovered sleeping during his shift at a Tennessee airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration is taking measures to fire an air traffic controller who was caught sleeping at McGhee Tyson Airport in Tennessee in February. Though the incident occurred a few months ago, the source says it was not revealed to the FAA until the recent story broke about the incident in Washington, D.C.

The source says the sleep may have been intentional, as the facility has an "up and down" set up with a tower controller on the floor above the approach controller who is in the radar room. The radar controller allegedly used cushions and a blanket from the break room to set up a bed and asked the upstairs controller to cover for him.

Aviators already face a number of hazards when they take flight, but the potential for errors made by those with the task of ensuring they land without incident is another concern to consider. Pilot life insurance is a potential way to prepare for the chance of a fatal accident, by having a death benefit set aside for loved ones, should a breadwinner die during an aviation crash.
