AOPA summit to host talks on safety and emergency survival

August 30, 2011, 08:29 am

The Aircraft Operators and Pilots Association recently announced a new seminar to take place at its annual Aviation Summit to be held from September 22-24 in Hartford, Connecticut. The seminar, "Emergency Survival: Boost Your Knowledge, Skills," is designed to give pilots a crash course in emergency aviation techniques.

Hosted by Dr. Ian Blair Fries, the lecture and discussion will include overviews of gliding techniques in the event of engine failure, ditching and forced landing practices and management of on-board and cabin fires.

Other safety seminars at the summit include a special talk with Doug Ritter, an aviation survival expert who will lecture on water survival techniques that include ditching, aircraft exit, emergency communication and in-water survival.

High level operating courses will also be offered in spin control, flying in high risk situations and night flying.

The risks of aircraft operation are unique, and regardless of a pilot's level of training, a good pilot insurance policy is always necessary to ensure proper coverage in the event of injury, illness or death. Many traditional insurance policies won't cover injury sustained in flight because flying is considered a high risk activity.
