ASR gets another patent for the safety of general aviation community

July 10, 2012, 02:42 pm

Aviation Safety Resources, a leader in safety systems for small aircraft, was recently awarded a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its Smart Recovery System for General Aviation Aircraft. The family owned business already has two other patents for its TriChute Safety Landing System.

The latest patented technology uses sensor systems that are available in military and commercial aircraft and applies them to the general aviation community. The Smart Recovery System monitors the aircraft's environment and makes decision based on the data it relays. The system immediately assesses an emergency situation, identifies where the problem is and deploys a device or system to fix the problem in the safest manner, unless the pilot chooses to override the action. The devices include a wide range of solutions to keep everyone on board safe.

"Among the devices and systems deployed are verbal warning systems, fire extinguisher systems, autopilot, flight control systems, airbags and ballistic parachute recovery systems including the TriChute Safe Landing System," said Dario Manfredi, president at Aviation Safety Resources. "Avionics companies have made great strides in creating new features; however, none begin with a comprehensive diagnostic and instant awareness or offer the integrated solutions promised by our Smart Recovery System."

The other patent ASR received was for the TriChute Safety Landing System, which gave the general aviation community a pilot-controlled mechanism that allowed passengers and aircraft to land safely in the event of an emergency. The technology separates the passenger area from the fuel-containing wings and deploys three parachutes that bring the passengers and plane down separately.

“The fact is, three parachutes are better than one,” said Manfredi at the time the TriChute Safety Landing System was patented. “ASR’s TriChute technology expands and improves upon existing single-chute designs, which are limited to smaller aircraft. The TriChute system is designed to safely land six-passenger aircraft and, down the road, even commuter jets, larger fixed aircraft and helicopters. We believe it will become the standard in aircraft design defining a new era in aviation safety.”

The latest patent comes shortly after Dr. Louis Hanson, an ASR team memeber, was lost to a tragic accident off the coast of Maine. Manfredi said that ASR technology was not available to pilots and that he is sure Hanson's life would have been saved had the technology been in place. Pilot life insurance is a good option, whether or not the technology is available.
