AVS outlines role in support of NextGen implementation

May 19, 2010, 07:30 pm

The Federal Aviation Administration's Aviation Safety organization recently released a work plan outlining its support efforts for the Next Generation Air Transportation System.

AVS will focus mainly on three areas in helping NextGen along. Those include standard development, overseeing approval processes and managing operational safety.

Peggy Gilligan, head of AVS, said the new system presents an opportunity to meet the nation's future air transportation needs.

"We're going to see giant leaps in technology, and AVS will continue its role to identify and mitigate risks as we introduce new systems and operations as quickly as possible," Gilligan said.

Gillian said AVS will continue to champion aviation safety as NextGen is implemented. Safety is one of the major aims of the new system, which will use GPS satellite technology to track airplanes.

The result should be fewer air collisions as traffic controllers and pilots are given more up-to-date information while planes are in the sky. A number of NextGen's safety features have already been implemented at airports in locations such as Philadelphia and Juneau, Alaska.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19787331-ADNFCR
