FAA brings mission for safer GA industry to SoCal

April 14, 2011, 11:25 pm

Southern California may be one of the first stops on the Federal Aviation Administration's tour around the country to promote air safety for general aviation pilots, as the Los Angeles Times reports the organization is planning two workshops in the area.

Though statistics show the number of accidents per 100,000 GA flight hours and the number of fatal GA accidents are down 75 and 60 percent, respectively, since 1960, the overall accident rate has not improved, the source says. Concerns over this inability to lower the accident rate is what sparked the FAA's campaign.

The group has already held one workshop in the Southern California area and has another planned in Hawthorne on April 30, the source reports.

"We need to get back to basics. The system is generally safe, but we can make it safer," FAA administrator Randy Babbitt told the paper. "We want to get every pilot to approach their flights as if their lives depend on it because it does."

Pilots should always consider the potential risks of flying and may benefit not only by being prepared in the event of an emergency situation, but also making preparations should a tragedy occur. Life insurance for pilots is an excellent way to do the latter, by having a source of financial assistance for the loved ones a pilot may leave behind if they perish in a fatal accident.
