LSA performs cold-temperature test

February 28, 2011, 08:08 pm

The REMOS light sport aircraft has recently undergone cold weather testing near the REMOS factory in Grand Forks, North Dakota, according to General Aviation News.

The testing consisted of 10 flight missions over a period of two days, in which the aircraft was subjected to temperatures as low as negative 11 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of negative 30. The aircraft took 90-minute cool down breaks between each mission, but no engine heat, auxiliary heat or blankets were allowed during those times.

The plane was prepared for the testing with the installation of a heater kit and an in-line thermostat, which maintain engine temperatures, keeping them within the optimal range for aircraft operation.

The REMOS LSA performed "without a flaw", according to officials from the company.

"It started promptly in every instance, quickly reached safe operating temperatures and kept the occupants warm and comfortable with plenty of cabin heat," Early Boyter, REMOS' vice president of marketing and sales, told General Aviation News.

Though this aircraft responded well in the cold temperatures, there have been instances where pilots have suffered fatal injuries due to aviation hazards resulting from extreme cold temperatures. Those who frequently fly during the winter could benefit from life insurance for pilots, in case their plane ever malfunctions during a winter flight.
