Texas plane crash leaves two dead

April 26, 2011, 09:52 pm

A recent aircraft crash in Texas has lead to the deaths of two men, both second lieutenants in the Air Force, according to the San Angelo Standard Times.

Second lieutenants Peter A. Sohm and John T. Rice, both 23, were graduates of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

The men were on-board a Christen Eagle II - a home-built experimental aircraft - when it crashed at around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, nearly 10 miles from San Angelo, the source says.

UPI reported that air traffic controllers in nearby Midland reported that, shortly before the accident, the aircraft disappeared from the radar screen. Prior to its disappearance however, the controllers said, the flight patterns resembled those of stunt flying.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will continue to investigate to determine the ultimate cause of the accident.

Accidents can occur when least expected and flying continues to be a risky recreation. As with all risks, pilots should ensure that, should something go wrong, their loved ones are protected. Pilot life insurance is an excellent way to at least ensure financial stability for those left behind following a tragedy.
