Upcoming FAA meeting to discuss helicopter safety

March 2, 2011, 10:14 pm

The Federal Aviation Administration's Safety Team will conduct a meeting to discuss initiatives for improving helicopter safety, according to Rotor News.

The meeting, which is to be held March 22 and 23 in Portland, Oregon, will be organized in conjunction with Helicopter Association International and the International Helicopter Safety Team. Together, the groups are inviting members of the aviation industry, including pilots, instructors, insurers, mechanics and small operators, to weigh in on factors that they consider obstacles to aviation safety.

Information collected from the meeting will be sent to the FAA headquarters, and may be used to create safety briefing materials.

Improving helicopter safety has been a major evolving goal in the industry. At the IHST's annual meeting in 2010, the group decided to focus on reducing helicopter accidents by 80 percent by 2016.

Despite concerted efforts to reduce the number of annual helicopter accidents, crash rates are still high. Those who pilot helicopters on a regular basis may want to invest in pilot insurance, as a way to care for their families if they are in a fatal accident.
