Airline ticket sales up in second quarter

November 2, 2010, 04:07 pm

Many consumers are finding that their dollar doesn't get them as far as it once did. The price of a lot of things has increased, including airline tickets.

Data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reveals that the average cost for a domestic flight was $341 during the second quarter of 2010, a marked increased from the $301 recorded during the same quarter last year. While the growth is a positive sign, rates are still lower than the $358 averaged during the third quarter of 2008.

Furthermore, the data reveals that airlines made just over 70 percent of their money from passenger fares.

There are a number of factors that could be causing rates to edge upwards once again. Numerous airlines have been offering a slew of incentives to get people to fly and spend their money once more.

The increase in ticket rates comes even though unemployment remains high in the country. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics says the unemployment rate has stayed around 10 percent.
