Boise Airport to keep TRACON system

Idaho's Boise Airport will get to keep its Terminal Radar Approach Control system, after the Federal Aviation Administration had thought about moving it to Salt Lake City.
According to U.S. Senator Mike Crapo, a Republican who represents Idaho, the FAA wanted to move the system because it saw the potential for saving money. However, a delegation from the state fought against those findings, while also saying it would lead to job losses and safety issues at the airport.
"This is the best solution in terms of cost and safety for southwest Idaho air traffic control," Crapo said. "Additionally, it will preserve good-paying jobs at the Boise Airport as we build toward future growth and development."
While the FAA decided to keep the TRACON system in Boise, it is also working on upgrading the country's air traffic system on the whole. Recently, the administration setforward final rules for the new Next Generation Air Transportation System, which gives guidance on when aircraft will have to comply with the new technologies being implemented.
Through NextGen, planes will be tracked using a satellite-based system, rather than ground-based radar.
