Camp teaches kids about aviation

August 13, 2010, 05:46 pm

A lot of kids may not be pumped at the idea of going to a camp to study math and science. Present the camp as a place to use a flight simulator and learn about aviation, however, and it may be a completely different story.

A group of 11 to 15-year-olds gained experience this summer building and flying airplanes at the Flight Summer Camp in Pennsylvania, reports the Ambler Gazette. A little bit of physics was snuck into the mix as well.

Physics teacher and program operator Joe Warwick says that he hopes the camp experience inspires the children to become more interested in science and technology.

"I want them to walk away knowing they can build these things," Warwick told the paper. "Hopefully, it sparks some interest and pushed them toward engineering.... It creates a great hobby they can share with their families or other kids."

While many people may not be able to agree how to best teach certain subjects in school, many acknowledge that academic success in math and the sciences is important for creating the next generation of workers.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19925369-ADNFCR
