Carla, the avatar, gets hired at Logan Airport

June 28, 2012, 02:01 pm

Logan International Airport in Boston is offering a new way to help travelers get through security checkpoints in the form of an avatar voice guiding them through the safety protocols.

Carla is the new virtual assistant at Logan. The lifelike hologram speaks Spanish and English and looks to streamline the airport’s security process by freeing up TSA agents to do other work rather than calling out protocols every so often.

“Safety and security is our No. 1 priority, and good security means good customer service,” said Massport Director of Aviation Ed Freni. “This new virtual greeter gives us an opportunity to collaborate with the TSA on a more efficient security checkpoint by educating passengers ahead of time on the dos and the don’ts of security screening. Our best asset in making the security screening process move along faster is an informed and prepared customer.”

The company that made Carla, Tensator, has tested the technology across the world. Logan is the second airport in the United States to use Carla, but it is the first to feature her  in the airport security line. Carla costs nearly $28,000 and will be expected in more areas of Logan if the debut goes well.
