Court upholds ban on LA airport solicitations

July 9, 2010, 03:00 pm

The federal appeals court has upheld a law aimed at preventing the solicitation of money from passengers at Los Angeles International Airport.

According to an airport announcement, the Los Angeles city ordinance in question was enacted in 1997 in an effort to prevent members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and other organizations from soliciting money in the terminals.

"This is a huge step forward in ensuring the comfort and safety of the traveling public at LAX," said Los Angeles World Airports' Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey. "From now on the traveling public will not have to worry about solicitors asking for money."

The ruling, which also drew praise from Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, will prevent solicitation at the airport's parking areas and sidewalks. However, groups will still be able to distribute literature and speak to willing travelers, who can also be asked to make non-immediate donations.

The airport also noted that before it was upheld in a federal appeals court, the law also passed the review of the California Supreme Court in March.
