Data shows decline in airline employees

October 20, 2010, 01:30 pm

With economic conditions slow to turn around, many companies have cut their workforce and held off from hiring new employees. The aviation industry is no exception.

Data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reveals that airlines employed 1.7 percent fewer people in August of this year than they did in the same month in 2009. A marked decline in full-time airline employees has taken place for the last 26 consecutive months.

One reason for the decline in full-time employees may be rooted in the fact that there were several airline mergers within the past year. The data reveals that five airlines decreased the number of full-time employees they had.

While the 1.7 percent decline in airline jobs over last year shows economic recovery is still in the works, the decrease is lower than those reported in previous months. So far, the change from previous month in passenger airline employment this year was greatest in April at 4.1 percent.

The decline in full-time employmentby airlines is mirrored across many industries. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the unemployment rate has remained near 10 percent for the past year.
