FAA keeps sloppy records

December 14, 2010, 04:28 pm

The Federal Aviation Administration is in charge of keeping track of all commercial and private pilot information. However, the Associated Press reports one-third of the aircraft in the country are not properly documented.

The lack of proper record keeping could pose as a major security problem. The AP reports airplane owners are being requested to resubmit their aircraft's registration information.

"The agency is moving to a mandatory re-registration system like the ones most states use to register automobiles, so we have more current and complete registration information in our database," the FAA said according to the AP.

Improper record keeping can also cause other serious problems. AINonline reports that last summer John and Martha King were handcuffed by police officials because they believed the couple was flying a stolen aircraft.

The identification number was retired eight years ago, reports AINonline, and since put back into circulation. Despite being well-known in the aviation industry, the police weren't knowledgeable about who the Kings were.

What happened to the Kings shows the importance of keeping track of all important flight documents, including pilot insurance and registration papers.
