FAA study seeks to reclassify general aviation airports around the country

July 22, 2011, 03:51 pm

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is examining general aviation airports around the country to get a better understanding of the purpose and function of these airports in their specific communities.

The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems reports that there are 2,950 non-primary airports around the country and 368 primary ones. Despite the classifications, the FAA stated that the term "non-primary" doesn't adequately denote the diverse roles played by these airports. General aviation airports can serve a wide variety of functions, including emergency medical services, aerial firefighting, business and personal trips, sightseeing tours, flight training and law enforcement and border control assistance.

General aviation industry associations, agencies, airport authorities and the local councils of communities with airports are working with the FAA to reclassify general aviation airports based on the specific roles they play. One of the main purposes of the endeavor is to help the general public better understand the significance of these general aviation airports and their required capital investments.

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), approximately 77 percent of all flights within the United States are general aviation flights. General aviation is an important and influential component of the aviation industry and the U.S. economy. Most aircraft owners also contribute to the national economy by purchasing pilot life insurance.
