General aviation airport in Nevada in danger of being closed

July 22, 2011, 03:49 pm

One of the nation's most rural airports that is serviced by commercial airlines is in danger of being shut down. The White Pine County Airport in Ely, Nevada, is the only airport within 240 miles of the town of 4,255 residents. It has survived this long due in large part to a federal program that subsidizes commercial airlines that fly to remote airports.

The House of Representatives recently passed a new version of the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill that would create a cap of $1,000 per passenger on the Transportation Department's Essential Air Service subsidy. Great Lakes Airlines, the sole commercial airline that services the White Pine County Airport, has been receiving $3,720 per passenger.

John Mica, House Transportation Committee Chairman, told the Las Vegas Sun, "I couldn't be more reasonable. If you ask anyone - anyone in congress or any person on the street - do you think we should be subsidizing an airline ticket more than $1,000, they'd say no."

No matter if an aircraft owner is flying in to a major commercial airport in a city or small municipal airport in a rural area, life insurance for pilots is a must. Flying can be dangerous, and pilots need to ensure that their families are well-protected and taken care of financially should anything happen to them.
