General Aviation supporters go to court

June 23, 2011, 03:52 pm

In an effort to continue their ongoing dispute with the Department of Transportation over privacy rights, representatives of the general aviation industry have taken their case to the high courts. The DOT announced it was going to dismantle the Block Aircraft Registration Request back in May and the fight has been ongoing ever since, according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

The BARR program as it currently operates allows people to block the details of their aircraft's movements from commercial flight tracking companies. Supporters of the lawsuit believe doing away with this program may put people’s lives at risk and could possibly cause pilots life insurance policy rates to rise.

"The government's plan sets the stage for anyone with an Internet connection - terrorists, cyber-stalkers, paparazzi, criminals, business competitors - to follow the movements of citizens and companies in real time," said National Business Aviation Association president, Ed Bolen.

The DOT says that its decision to cancel the program is part of President Obama's commitment to transparency in government, according to AVweb.com. The administration feels that since all aircraft are using public airspace and air traffic control facilities the public has a right to information about their activities.
