Illinois airports to see changes

June 12, 2012, 03:23 pm

The Pekin City Council in Illinois is set to consider a proposal to replace fuel stations at the Pekin Municipal Airport.

The total cost of the project, including a contract with Hanson Professional Services and engineering fees will cost nearly $188,000. The Federal Aviation Administration will pay for 90 percent of the project.

"As far as I can tell, the pumps have been there since the airport opened in the 1960s," said city engineer Mike Guerra. "It is to the point where it is very hard to find parts."

The project is expected to be completed come fall, and the airport will feature new pumps, filters, meters, a credit card machine and updating lighting for planes to land at night.

Just north, the Chicago Rockford International Airport will be buying property for a new building. Although airport officials have not released exactly what the real estate will be used for, Mike Dunn, the airport’s director of government affairs and economic development, said the property will most likely be used for cargo.

The land is on 9.8 acres, which is the site of a 72,600-square-foot building and has a market value of $41.9 million, according to the Rockford Township Assessor’s office.
