Independent pilots on the rise, but safety comes first

November 7, 2011, 06:19 pm

In an interview with Crain's Cleveland Business, Steve Maiden, CEO of Constant Aviation, said over the past year the company has experienced double-digit increases in sales growth, as more corporations and wealthy individuals are investing in small jets and need maintenance services.

Constant Aviation is currently working out of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, but the space is becoming too cramped for the growing company. In February, the company added a 15,000-square-foot building specifically for inspection and repair of composite panels and other parts made from high-tech materials. In October, Constant added an extra 25,000 square feet to its main hangar. The company now takes up more than 100,000 square feet at Hopkins, the source reported.

However, Hopkins is an ideal spot for Constant Aviation, as the airport is full of amenities and equipment the company can use in inclement weather. While major airlines have downsized due to the economy, the small jets business has not experienced the same dip. Thus resources are more available to companies such as Constant Aviation, the source reported.

For the booming industry to remain safe, potential small jet pilots should be sure to receive adequate training before taking to the skies. In a piece for Aberdeen News, Jerry Krueger, a commercial pilot, recalled his Navy flight training experiences. In a particular circumstance, Krueger found himself in full control of the plane after his instructor came down with vertigo.

Krueger's story, and the experience of many other pilots, illustrate the importance of pilot insurance and protecting the pilot and the plane from unpredictable situations.
