McCarran Airport looks to increase passenger traffic

June 27, 2012, 04:36 pm

McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas recently opened its new $2.4 billion Terminal 3. The airport is looking to increase passenger traffic from around the world with the expansion.

"What they've done is good, solid planning," said Michael Boyd, an aviation analyst based in Evergreen, Colorado. "When Air China wants to come in, AirIndia or Turkish Air, they're going to want a gate right away. This is a good move for Las Vegas. It keeps them ahead of the curve."

The expansion added 14 gates and an eight-story parking structure. McCarran is currently the eighth-busiest airport in the nation and handled 41.5 million passengers last year. With the expansion, the terminal increased its capacity to 53 million passengers a year.

A recent report has shown that Wyoming's Casper/Natrona County International Airport increased boardings by 3.5 percent in May compared with the same month last year. The airport expects increased air traffic throughout the remainder of year, with Delta adding a flight last month and United planning to add a fifth daily regional jet in July.

Pilots meeting the high demand of passenger traffic in these airports would benefit from pilot life insurance, in an effort to prepare for the worst case scenario.
