Reauthorizing FAA one of new congress' priorities

January 28, 2011, 04:50 pm

The new chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure committee in the House of Representatives has announced that one of his priorities is to officially reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration, according to General Aviation News.

Representative John Mica, from Florida, was also the committee chairman in 2003, when the FAA had its last full authorization. However, since then it has been operating based on a series of short extensions provided by Congress. Mica reportedly stated that a full authorization will enable the organization to help foster a more efficient and fiscally responsible aviation industry on all levels.

Mica intends to support new legislation related to the NextGen program, but his main priority is actively overseeing the Transportation Security Administration and making it less bureaucratic, according to General Aviation. For general aviation, this would mean "less government intrusion and more reliance on GA’s own security measures," according to the article.

Safety is not only an important issue for government legislatures working to create aviation laws. Pilots constantly encounter safety issues while in flight, and their families may often be concerned about losing their loved one and financial provider. Life insurance for pilots is an effective way for them to provide for their families in the event of an accident.
