Aviation memories abound at annual flight festival in Wisconsin

July 26, 2011, 12:13 pm

The EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin sees pilots from across the country come together in celebration of aviation. According to the Green Bay Press Gazette, people come for many reasons, chief among them being the camaraderie of fellow aviators and the stories heard from one another.

Connie Loken, a 57-year-old woman from Nashau, New Hampshire, said "It's just exciting, and I just love the people you keep seeing year after year."

Rich Roberts, a 57-year-old Virginia Beach native, spoke to the source about his earliest aviation memories and his love of flying. His great-uncle used to take him for rides in his crop duster, and Roberts remembers receiving photographs of military planes after writing letters to Air Force officers.

"That sort of thing was always in my family, so it's a little more than a passing interest," said Roberts. "To be up there and free and flying… that's deep and born within us."

Green Bay native Jim Sorenson, who served as a waist gunner in a B-17 during World War II, got to take a reunification ride in one of the large bombers during the AirVenture. The last time he was in one of the planes was when he was 20 years old and was shot down over Europe.

Flying can be dangerous, and life insurance for pilots can ensure the financial stability of surviving family members in the event of an accident.
