BTS reports freight shipments up

June 15, 2010, 07:51 pm

A metric that measures the amount of freight in the country saw a recent increase, according to a report from the Department of Transportation.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics noted that its Freight Transportation Services Index increased 0.3 percent in April when compared to levels seen in March. Of the last 11 months, nine have seen a rise in the index, as freight shipments recover from the recession.

Since June 2009, freight shipments are up 4.9 percent, after seeing declines of 15.3 percent during the previous 10 months. However, the first four months of this year saw an overall drop of 1.4 percent.

"The index measures the output of the for-hire freight transportation industry and consists of data from for-hire trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and air freight," the BTS said.

The BTS also reported recently that the number of airline passengers in the country increased in March. Domestic travel was up 2 percent, while international flights saw a 5 percent increase in passenger loads. Overall, the number of air travelers rose 2.4 percent when compared to March of last year.
