Companies announce development of antenna for general aviation use

May 24, 2010, 04:23 pm

Two companies recently announced a partnership to develop an antenna that will help members of the general aviation industry.

LiveTV and Iridium Communications came to an agreement on developing the antenna, which will utilize the latter's satellite communications system. Greg Ewert, an executive vice president with Iridium, said the company's success in the maritime industry led to it proceeding with an aviation version of its product.

"Commercial and general aviation passengers can now be within reach, even when flying oceanic or polar routes," Ewert said.

The companies said they expect to have air trials of the new antenna by the fourth quarter of this year, while commercial availability is expected sometime during the first part of 2011. Through the new hardware, those who operate or ride in aircraft will be able to stay connected while in the air.

Other satellite-based innovations are also being pursued by the Federal Aviation Administration through its Next Generation Air Transportation System. The new technology will provide more up-to-date information on the location of planes, which should reduce collisions.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19795683-ADNFCR
