Dayton Air Show takes off July 7

June 29, 2012, 05:17 pm

The annual summer aviation celebration known as the Vectren Dayton Air Show is set to take place July 7 and 8 at Dayton International Airport in Ohio.

The event that began in 1975 will showcase word-class aerobatic champions, military jet demonstrations and various forms of entertainment for all ages to enjoy.

Officials of the event expect nearly 75,000 people to be attendance. Last year the event saw only 65,000 in attendance due to heat advisories throughout the entire weekend. The gates will open at 9 a.m. and will close at 6 p.m. on both days. A feature show will commence at 11 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. on both days.

Individuals who are interested can purchase tickets at daytonairshow.com, receive discounted prices at a local Kroger supermarket or buy them at the gate.

According to the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau, not only does the event provide enjoyment for the entire community, the Vectren Dayton Air Show draws visitors from all around the world and stimulates the local economy, bringing  in more than $3.5 million each year.

"The event does draw people from different parts of our country and internationally," said Jacquelyn Powell, president and CEO of Dayton/ Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Those visitors who come to our community are spending money in our retail shops, they're spending money on fuel, they're staying in our hotels and dining in our restaurants. They're bringing outside dollars into Dayton, Montgomery County and the surrounding area, and they're leaving their money behind."

The event is featuring the United States Navy Blue Angels. The six-plane flying team with choreographed flight performances are intended to inspire future aviators and entertain onlookers.

"It's one of the largest and best-known air shows,” said Capt. Ben Blanton, senior C-130 pilot for Fat Albert Airlines for the United States Navy Blue Angels. “You're going to see not just the United States Navy Blue Angels, but a whole bunch of other performers, some of the top performers in the industry. ... It's going to be kind of an aviation lover's dream."

Other air shows include performances from the USAF Heritage Flight, the Sea Harrier, TORA TORA TORA, Michael Goulian, P51 Quick Silver, Gene Soucy Airshows, the Misty Blues and the A-4B Skyhawk.

Shows like these are a good reminder to get pilot insurance to ensure loved ones carry on the same fervor for flying.
