Domestic passengers down, while international travelers up in February

May 18, 2010, 07:00 pm

Preliminary data from the U.S. Department of Transportation shows that there were fewer travelers during February.

In all, airlines based in the country transported 48.9 million passengers to both domestic and international locations during the second month of this year, which is 1.9 percent less than was seen in February of 2009, the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics said..

Furthermore, data show that the number of airline passengers was down 14.4 percent when compared to February 2008, as airlines continue to contend with the effects of the recession.

The number of passengers taking domestic flights declined 2.4 percent between this year and last and marked the lowest number seen for the second month of the year since 2003.

While domestic travelers were down, international passenger totals increased 1.7 percent from 2009, according to the BTS.

Although passenger numbers were down for the month, the Federal Aviation Administration recently said it expects the U.S. airline industry to service 1 billion passengers every year by 2023, one reason why it is pushing an effort to improve the country's air traffic control system.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19784196-ADNFCR
