Flight training scholarship program launching this month

June 22, 2011, 01:34 pm

The Aircraft and Pilots Association recently announced the creation of two new $5,000 scholarships for student pilots. These funds will be used to help individuals interested in sport, recreational, or private pilot certificates. An increase in the number of young pilots in the air may also lead to a growth in the number of new pilots life insurance policies that are being sold.

The AOPA's president, Craig Fuller, said the creation of these scholarships is the result of a study commissioned for their Flight Training Student Retention Initiative. This initiative is aimed at increasing the number of students who earn their pilots certificates.

"Although student pilots told us they are more concerned about receiving good value for their training dollar than they are about the cost of training per se, the fact remains that learning to fly requires a substantial financial commitment," Fuller said.

Officials are hoping that these scholarships will help the right pilots succeed in their goals and encourage others to explore the world of general aviation. Applications are now being accepted online and the deadline is August 19.
