Garmin releases new weather technology for pilots

Garmin recently released the GWX 70, a new solid-state weather radar that offers advanced Doppler-enabled features in an affordable price to the general aviation community. The technology provides accurate and real-time weather to a pilot's cockpit through its long range and adjustable scanning profiles.
"Compared to earlier generation magnetron-based weather radar systems, the digital GWX 70 offers significant improvements in capability, reliability and cost of ownership," said Carl Wolf, Garmin's vice president of aviation sales and marketing. "And with optional advanced features like turbulence detection, the GWX 70 will help provide a safe, comfortable ride for passengers and crew."
Wolf added that technologies like this have only been offered on commercial aircraft and high-end business jets.
Garmin also recently announced the GDL 88, the first dual like ADS-B solution for certified aircraft. This new technology provides a comprehensive level of air traffic monitoring to a pilot's cockpit. It gives pilots advanced traffic awareness of posing threats while in the air, and is even useful detecting ground vehicles before takeoff.
GDL 88's patent is pending and is expected to receive Federal Aviation Administration approval at the end of this year. It is expected to cost $3,995.
With advancing technologies, the odds of an emergency are diminishing, but for those still looking to prepare, pilot insurance is a viable option.
