Missing re-registration deadlines could restrict pilots' travel plans

May 10, 2011, 12:59 pm

Pilots often have a number of administrative requirements to keep track of, which generally include paperwork. Whether it be keeping track of certification documents or registering for pilot insurance to ensure their families are cared for if an accident occurs, these important responsibilities are essential to have prepared before taking flight.

An upcoming requirement to add to the list is pilot re-registration, which is being handled in batches, but must be completed by specific deadlines. The most recent deadline for example, was April 30 and applied to individuals who originally registered their aircrafts during the month of April in any prior year. Those who do not complete their re-registration by the deadline will not be allowed to fly their aircraft when their current registration expires at the end of June.

The re-registration process is new for aircrafts, but is similar to registration processes for other items, according to the AOPA.

"It's really just like our auto or truck annual and biennial registration in your home state," Rodney Martz of the AOPA Pilot Information Center said. "Now it's going to be federal for your aircraft as well, but it’s on a three-year basis."

Still the process may take some getting used to and some have already missed their re-registration deadlines, including the pilot whose aircraft recently crashed into a home in Maine.
