Ottawa airport displays famous 1932 royal aircraft

August 30, 2011, 08:31 am

The 1932 de Havilland Fox Moth, owned and operated by King Edward VIII, was placed on display at the Ottawa International Airport in Ottawa, Ontario, according to Ottawa This Week. The aircraft will remain on display in the airport's lobby through August, 2012.

The Fox Moth is a lightweight training aircraft very similar to the de Havilland Tiger Moth, the training model that taught many World War II combat pilots how to fly.

"It's something that people don’t see everyday," said Ottawa Airport spokesperson Krista Kealy. "They don’t have the opportunity to get up close and personal with an aircraft like that every day and we’re glad to offer the opportunity. For the airport, there’s an obvious connection to these aircraft that have been used in war time. It’s a natural partnership."

While the plane is still fully operational, officials at the airport say it will soon be officially grounded in order to preserve its mechanical integrity so that people can enjoy it for years to come.

The source notes that though somewhat antiquated, airplane models similar to the Fox Moth are still popular among some amateur pilots. While much less agile than their modern counterparts, the Moths provide an authentic flying experience. Owners of antique aircraft will probably want to buy an appropriate pilot insurance policy to protect both the unique health and lifestyle nuances of their life as a pilot as well as their aircraft investment.
