Reports indicate that pilot certificates are in decline

Two recent reports, one released by the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators and one by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, found that of student pilots who enter pilot training, only about 40 percent ultimately receive their private pilot's certificate.
The numbers are alarming, and a number of branches of the airline industry are concerned that the low completion rates may eventually lead to a shortage of pilots across the board. Originally designed to train pilots during World War II, the Civilian Pilot Training Program has changed little since its inception, and analysts believe the low completion rates may be tied to a lack of a more modernized training program.
Similar studies also note that the accident rate has been increasing in recent years. A high percentage of incidents are attributed to pilot error, a possible indication that training is inadequate.
