Resolution introduced to recognize general aviation's contribution to Haitian relief

April 30, 2010, 05:37 pm

A resolution presented in the U.S. Senate aims at recognizing general aviation pilots for their contribution to the relief efforts in Haiti.

Introduced by Alaska Democrat Mark Begich and Nebraska Republican Mike Johanns, the resolution aims to highlight the more than 4,500 flights made by general aviation pilots in the 30 days following the earthquake in the Caribbean country.

"With Haiti's transportation network in ruins, general aviators from across the country selflessly volunteered their time, money and most importantly their planes, to help ship over one million pounds of cargo and supplies to the people of Haiti," Begich said.

One example of the efforts put forward by private pilots during the crisis in Haiti was the work of Christian relief group Bahamas Habitat, which works to organize fliers and their planes to aid troubled areas. The group organized volunteers to deliver supplies after the earthquake, which struck the country on January 12.

Along with shipping needed relief supplies to Haiti, volunteer pilots also ferried doctors and other relief workers to the country to assist its people. ADNFCR-3158-ID-19753861-ADNFCR
