Students receive quick flying lesson at local center

December 23, 2011, 11:19 am

The Marietta Center for Advanced Academics in Georgia is offering for the fourth year in a row a three-day flying lesson for local students. The program is available to students in third, fourth and fifth grade who are learning about flight during their school's Aviation Days.

The goal of the three-day lesson is to integrate the schools' lessons on engineering with hands-on classroom activities, the Marietta Daily Journal reported. During the lesson, students participate in a variety of aviation-themed programs throughout the school, working with parents and teachers who are passionate about planes and flying. Students learn the history of flight through presentations at the Warner Robins Museum of Aviation. Presenters will also discuss the importance of safety precautions, such as pilot insurance, for anyone planning to fly in the future.

A museum in Kansas is also offering programs that engage students in an aviation experience. The Kansas Aviation Museum will host a B-52 flight simulator open to the public. The simulator will allow users to have a virtual flying experience, which was originally designed for the U.S. Air Force, based on the technology and features of an actual B-52 cockpit, Biz Journals reported.

Users can select a pilot or co-pilot simulation, as well as be a passenger in one of the two observation seats, the source reported.
