Satcom Direct shows mobile influence in aviation with FlightDeck 360

December 19, 2012, 02:16 pm

General aviation tools have begun to shift toward mobile devices as technology continues to increase capabilities. This year, the aviation industry has seen a wide range of mobile offerings that look to improve pilot safety and efficiency.

In one of the most recent announcements, Satcom Direct launched FlightDeck 360, a mobile application that allows user to view real-time flight data and use datalink communications while in the air with an iPad. In addition, the app's user can access messages in flight, pre-departure clearances, oceanic clearances, flight plans and support documents before powering up the aircraft.

“FlightDeck 360 allows aircraft of all sizes to view flight critical data in real time and experience the benefits of datalink communications while in-flight,” said Scott Hamilton, vice president of strategic development at Satcom Direct. "And you only need an Internet connection to use the app. It offers cost savings to customers, because you don’t have to upgrade your cockpit to an on-board flight management system."

Hamilton added that with FlightDeck 360, a pilot can install internet on an aircraft and gain cabin connectivity and datalink functionality for nearly the same price. The system further enhances existing flight management systems, if there is one already in place.

FlightDeck 360 is available at the App Store and is compatible with all iPads.
In October, QinetiQ North America released an updated version of its Aviation Data Trainer application, while a month prior to that, ATP launched the HubConnect Document Management App and Mobile Service for the iPad.

The Aviation Data Trainer app encourages pilots to move to all-digital products and apps when it comes memorizing and testing themselves on the International Civil Aviation Organization and International Air Transportation Association data sets. TheHubConnect Document Management App and Mobile Service allows iPad subscribers to access a library of maintenance publications, regulatory documents and pilot operating handbooks.

“We developed this app in collaboration with our customers and OEM partners to meet the growing demand for an iPad solution that provides mobile and offline access to aircraft technical documents, regulatory publications and pilot operating handbooks,” said Oleg Zhoglo, ATP product manager. “The advantage of the HubConnect App is that subscribers to the ATP Aviation Hub Online Service can now access their content subscriptions out in the field, or in the cockpit, without requiring an internet connection.”

Pilots in the general aviation community are always encouraged to obtain pilot life insurance no matter how technologically advanced a cockpit becomes.
