Advanced imaging technology scanners to be added at 28 airports

July 20, 2010, 02:09 am

Increased security is coming to 28 airports in the country. The Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be used to install advanced imaging technology.

The screening device creates an outline of a person that is viewed by an officer. AIT is supposed to help detect weapons and other harmful objects that people may try to sneak onto a plane under their clothes.

The DHS says that the technology does not emit enough radiation to harm people. In fact, they say that it emits less radiation than a cell phone.

"As part of the Department's ongoing efforts best protect the traveling public and detect terrorism threats, we continue to deploy state-of-the-art advanced imaging technology across the country," says Napolitano. "The rapid deployment of this critical technology, made possible by Recovery Act funds, will strengthen security at even more airports nationwide."

San Antonio International Airport is expecting to receive an AIT device. The equipment is being met with some opposition, reports the San Antonio Express-News. Groups have expressed concern over the privacy and safety of AIT use.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19900094-ADNFCR
