Passengers permitted to take knives on planes

March 15, 2013, 10:42 am

Passengers on commercial flights will soon be able to carry small knives with blades up to six inches long if a decision is not reached to block the measure.

The date that passengers will be allowed to carry knives on planes is April 25, but flight attendants have filed an appeal to the United States Congress to stop the decision from taking place.

The issue of carrying small knives on a plane has been a problem since the September 11 attacks, in which terrorists used a box cutter to hold the airplane and its passengers hostage.

"It's very simple for flight attendants, whose jobs changed on September 11th 2001, that we were not only aviation's first responders, but we became aviation's last line of defense," Sara Nelson, official from the American Flight Association, told ABC News.

As the dangers of flying increased after the September 11 attacks, more Americans were cautious of the dangers present when flying. Pilots were also more cautious. With the chance of things going wrong on a plane, aviators should invest in pilot insurance so their families are taken care of if something goes wrong while navigating the skies.
