Airline to host diversity summit

October 7, 2010, 09:51 am

Southwest Airlines will be meeting with leaders of other Fortune 500 companies in Dallas, Texas for a Diversity Summit.

Topics at the summit will include discussions on workplace inclusion, education, and the evolving workforce. The rippling effect of the summit can be great, as Southwest Airlines employs more than 35,000 people nationwide.

Southwest Airlines vice president of communications and strategic outreach Linda Rutherford says as the company continues to grow, such a summit is needed.

"The purpose of this Summit is to listen and learn about diversity and inclusion best practices through open dialogue and interactive workshops," says Rutherford. "A modern and diverse workforce is a key competitive advantage in the national marketplace."

While Southwest Airlines is hosting the first Diversity Summit, the employer doesn't lack knowledge about creating an inclusive work environment. Earlier this year, the airline was recognized by Hispanic Business Magazine for its diversity measures, in particular its commitment to hiring and promoting Hispanics.

The airline has said that having a diverse workforce is important and helps keep the company competitive on the national level.
