Forbes blog recommends 'Zipcar of the air'

January 13, 2011, 03:24 pm

A recent blog on Forbes.com has suggested that 2011 will possess an economic climate for change and in order for the general aviation field to take advantage of that climate, they will need innovation. The author's recommendation? An airplane equivalent to the popular service Zipcar.

Author Allen Howell has suggested a form of general consumption aircraft, where multiple users would share private planes and use them for travel to a specific destination. This would make it significantly more affordable to become involved in general aviation and relieve one of the main deterrents of utilizing private planes, which, according to Howell, is the price.

The inspiration for this idea was the popular car service Zipcar, through which users pay a monthly fee and share a number of small vehicles within a certain area, simply parking it in a designated spot when they are done. The plane equivalent that Howell discusses goes a step further and includes a level of social networking as well, getting to know fellow passengers online before traveling.

Though ideas such as those discussed by Howell could expand the popularity of general aviation and perhaps encourage more people to learn to fly, it is important that people consider the dangers of general aviation. Those who learn to fly should consider life insurance for pilots as an extra precaution.
