How to learn to fly faster, for less money

January 18, 2011, 04:56 pm

Those who desire to learn to fly may be able to do so in less time than the required 40 hours for a pilot's license, and for less money, according to an article in the Fort Morgan Times.

Flight instructor Elliot Arthur informed the Times that those who just want to learn to fly in general need not apply for a full pilot's license. They have the alternative of applying for a light sports aircraft license, which only requires 20 hours of in-flight training.

In addition to requiring less time, training for this type of license also costs nearly half as much as training for a private license, at around $3500 to $4000.

However, there are some major differences between the qualifications allotted by the two licenses, according to Arthur. Pilots with light sports aircraft licenses are only allowed to fly with one passenger during the daytime. They are also only allowed to fly planes weighing up to 1320 pounds, whereas those with regular private pilot licenses can fly planes weighing up to 12,500 pounds.

Aspiring pilots who decide to go for a light sports aircraft license should still consider pilot insurance, since light aircraft flying also presents life-threatening dangers.
