A port authority in Florida recently announced the groundbreaking for a new general aviation facility in the Fort Myers area.

The Lee County Port Authority said the new General Aviation Complex at Page Field General Aviation Airport will take the place of the current terminal. The new facility will feature a two-story terminal building and a multiuse hangar, along with other features.

Robert Ball, executive director of the port authority, said business at the airport amounted to 76,000 operations every year. It also provides 1,000 jobs and $95.4 million to the area's economy.

"The infrastructure improvements started today at Page Field will help us meet the future demand of general aviation in Southwest Florida," Ball said.

The changes at the field could bring in as much as $28 million to the economy, while they will cost $16.2 million. The project is expected to create 300 jobs while it's being constructed.

The economic importance of general aviation has gotten a recent push through a campaign from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. The AOPA says that the industry supports nearly 1.3 million jobs across the country.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19770436-ADNFCR
