Airline sells tickets through social media

August 16, 2010, 06:10 pm

Social media has become a major part of people's lives. Networking site Facebook, for example, started out as a way for college students to stay in touch with one another, but has ballooned into a platform used by people of all walks of life - including business.

Delta Airlines recently announced that consumers can now purchase airline tickets on the company's Facebook page.

The company says they know many of their passengers use Facebook so offering ticket sales through social media seems like a natural step.

"Our customers are spending more time online and are looking for new ways to connect with us," said Delta vice president of eCommerce Bob Kupbens. "We're now delivering technology where our customers are - from our own website to our Facebook page to internet news sites and beyond."

Creating more ways for consumers to purchase airline tickets may help boost sales for some airlines. Overall, airline traffic increased almost 3 percent from last May,according to the Research and Innovative Technology Administration. Despite the up-tick in travel from last year, numbers are still below where they were two years ago, according to RITA.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19926036-ADNFCR
